Is it candy? Is it a drink? Is it a snack? Is it diet food? Is it a cocktail ingredient? Well, yes, sort of, to all of these!
These fruit flavored drink (or snack?) pouches are super fun to eat (or drink? IDK!) Konjac (aka conjac or konyakku as its sometimes spelled) is a jello-like (but vegan!) jelly made from Devil's-Tongue-root starch. You can break it up a bit by squeezing around the pouch before you take the cap off, and then slurp it out of the straw on top of the bag. The flavors are just awesome, in the way that Japan tends to nail certain fruit flavors in ways that we can't get in American snacks. The grape tastes just like Concord grapes. The peach tastes awesomely of fresh peaches. The lychee tastes natural, clean, and fun.
The whole "diet food" thing I mentioned earlier is also a fun feature, and in a way, how these are marketed in Japan. Everyone in Japan knows that konjac jelly tends to expand in your stomach once consumed, so you can end up feeling quite full after eating it. That means these pouches are a great low-calorie, satisfying, afternoon snack that can keep you from munching on chips and candy before dinner.
