Calbee first made this product in 1964 in response to the rice shortage following WWII. They looked to wheat, which was cheaper and more abundant than rice since it was shipped in by the US to combat starvation in Japan. This iconic snack was born of the owner's ingenuity and love of shrimp tempura.
