I took a bunch of omiyage home for Thanksgiving and one of the items I took was a jar of this garlic miso. Much to my surprise, everyone in my family wanted it! 😂 I ended up giving it to my cousin because I get to see him least often. He took it home and promptly ate it over rice. Then, on the next day, he told me he ate it with cucumber and cabbage. And then he made a hotpot soup - the kind where you season the broth individually in your own bowl and not in the pot as a whole. It seems my cousin clearly testified to how versatile this stuff is, and how much he liked it!
Garlic Miso is a ready-to-eat condiment like guacamole or ketchup and it's a staple at Japanese steakhouses because it’s really good on steak. It’s also meant to go on rice. Basically, this is a highly delicious and standard Japanese table condiment (so don’t mistake it or use it like regular miso paste.) It’s really good on everything. Put it on everything.
And speaking of my cousin’s hotpot, now I want to make it for myself, and season it with this garlic miso, cuz that sounds too dang good. I would also use yuzu kosho and shiro dashi, as additional seasoning options btw.
