These soft, chewy, lightly citrusy candies are the original Bontan Rice Candies! (You know these candies as the chewy ones with the edible, dissolving "paper" wrapped around on the outside. This is the original version tho.) Seika Foods invented this style of candy back in 1924 and hasn't changed its recipe since, because why mess with what works? "Bontan" means Pomelo, which is the tangy citrus that is used to flavor these candies.
What makes this candy so unique (besides the edible wrapper) is that it is made with mochi rice and it embodies the texture of mochi okashi (mochi treats). It's made with Hiyoku-mochi rice from Saga and Kumomoto prefectures and is flavored with tropical citruses grown in Southern Kyushu: Akune Pomelo, Sour Pomelo, and Mandarine Orange.
